Your microphone
Choosing a microphone
Wavelet uses your Mac's built-in microphone if it has one. We set it as the default because we found the audio quality is quite good and the response time is almost immediate. Otherwise it uses your computer's default input microphone. You can change this any time in Settings.
Bluetooth headsets
AirPods and Bluetooth headsets are not recommended for dictation because they take a few seconds to connect, during which the microphone is off. The microphone in Bluetooth headsets is also generally worse than the built-in microphone. Also, if you are listening to music, the sound quality of your music drops while you dictate because the headset has to switch from stereo mode to headset mode. It still works fine if you are in a pinch and just need to dictate something quickly.
Wavelet shows this icon () until the headset has connected.
Closed lid
Anytime you close a MacBook's lid, macOS automatically disables the built-in microphone. If you close the lid in the middle of a dictation, Wavelet will stop and ask you to open the lid or pick another microphone.
When Wavelet hears nothing
If no sound reaches Wavelet, the dictation will stop, display No sound from the microphone. and offer to choose another microphone.
